Email delivery

Emailing reports from an Oracle APEX application

There are two ways to get a report into someone's inbox from APEX: automatically, on a schedule, or on demand when a user clicks a button. ApexReporter Studio handles both, using one SMTP configuration for the whole deployment — no PL/SQL UTL_MAIL/UTL_SMTP code to maintain.

Automatic, scheduled email delivery

Set the [smtp] section once in config.ini with the outbound email account report delivery should use, then attach Email as the delivery method on any report's schedule (see scheduling reports). Every run renders the report in the chosen format and emails it automatically — no APEX page, button, or session involved at all; this runs entirely server-side.

On-demand email, triggered from an APEX button

For a "Send me this report" button on an APEX page rather than a fixed schedule, call the render endpoint from server-side PL/SQL (via APEX_WEB_SERVICE or a REST-enabled ORDS call) to fetch the rendered file, then attach it to an email through APEX's own mail handling — or simply link the user to the report and let them forward it themselves using the plain-link/JavaScript approaches on the installation guide.

Which approach to use

Use scheduled email delivery for anything recurring and unattended (a daily/weekly/monthly report to a fixed distribution list). Use the on-demand render-and-attach approach when a specific user, on a specific page, with specific filter values, needs a one-off copy sent somewhere.
